Captain's Log: Stardate Lunch

img_3496.jpg

Man, is this the semester from heck. I have been a super busy Phoebe. I've fallen asleep grading papers like four times in the past two weeks.

That doesn't mean that I haven't had time to eat, though--there's always time for food! Last week (or, ten days ago, actually), I whipped up this recipe from this blog. Great for left-overs, as demonstrated above. I added a teensy bit of Gorgonzola to give the reheated veggies some bite and whipped up a tuna sandwich with walnuts and cranberries. The result was a superbly autumnal meal.

Excuse the Vulcan hair. These were taken on Halloween, and I was getting prepped for a costume party

You know, a lot of people, generally, but women, especially, feel self-conscious about the idea of having someone watch them eat. This webpage has been an interesting exercise in confidence. Obviously, I'm not afraid of posting unflattering pictures of myself, but I actually think I look pretty good in these. Pocky and a bit freckled, maybe, but I don't feel squeamish. There was a point in my life when I probably would have felt at least weird about it--self conscious of the act of eating and my food choices (thinking to myself: "There's cheese and mayonnaise on that plate--what will people think?!"). I think part of being fearless is acting fearless, though; in order to slay the beast, you have to face it head on. This beast is called food. This beast is called eating in public unabashedly and unashamedly.

(But maybe I've just traded in self-consciousness for vanity. That's possible too.)

After lunch, I partook in some wonka brand confections. I love runts. And nerds. And everlasting gobstoppers. Sweet, glistening carnauba wax. Apparently, the neighborhood kids weren't so excited by it. No one came to my house on Halloween! I ended up unloading most of the loot on my students, who didn't seem to mind.

Science Officer T'pho demonstrates the proper way to consume a fun-sized box of nerds.

Insert nerd joke . . . here.

Oh, incidentally, I have some poems up right now at nth Position. There's no food in them, but there is raunchiness. Eating and raunchiness are sort of related, right? It's all about being a good animal.

Phoebe eats starfruits and BLATs

What a sad lack of updating! I've eaten so much good food, too. Unfortunately, when I got back from my trip, I was first behind in schoolwork, then horribly ill, then behind in schoolwork again. I'm finally almost caught up with things, caught up enough that I don't feel like my head will explode if I bloggyblogblog.

Pictured above is a lovely starfruit purchased from Publix. It was probably just about the only thing I enjoyed eating when I was running a fever. Luckily, they're full of vitamin C.

Just a note, you're apparently not supposed to eat these if you have kidney disorders. They can kill you. Hardcore!

As the illness waned, I made one of my favorite things: a sandwich. Specifically, a BLT. What is it about these three things that go so well together?

As you can see, I didn't just use bacon in my sandwich--I used America's Favorite: Bacon! Truth be told, this wasn't even technically a BLT. It also had apple slices in it. So a BLAT? Also, it had mayonnaise. And some horseradish sauce. And bread. So, more like a BBLATHM.

I microwaved the bacon for maximum laziness. As you can see, I had quite a bit of trouble taking a picture of myself eating a sandwich.

Success!

A Very Special Episode of phoebeeating.com

I arrived in New Jersey on Friday so that I could celebrate love. Saturday the 13th was our (mine, Jordan's, the world's) sixth anniversary. And next Saturday, his friend John Randall and girlypal Karina are getting hitched. Also, I came to New Jersey to experience autumn. There is no autumn in Florida, and anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar.

Anyway.

For our sixth, Jordan & I went to the Iron Forge Inn in Warwick, New York. This place is a gem of a gemmy gem in the middle of nowhere. You follow long, winding, foggy roads, hoping that the headless horseman won't get you (because that's what happens in New York State in autumn). Then you spend an exorbitant amount on amazing food. I ate: artisanal cheeses, wheat beer and onion soup, monkfish, and blueberry cobbler, and drank several glasses of Reisling and something called a "Harvest Cider." Jordan ate several courses of food, all of which somehow involved beets.

Fancy cheese plate/boyfriend.

Monkfish action shots.

You might notice that I look kind of funny in these pictures. No, I'm not talking about my hair. It's because I was a woman with a secret. Also, because nerves were sort of making me want to puke, despite the fact that the food was incredibly delicious (but not helped by the generous quantities and overall richness). That's what love does, especially generous quantities of incredibly rich love. You see, after we got back from the restaurant, I proposed to Jordan.

(He said yes.)

But don't worry. I promise that phoebeeating.com will not become focused on tiaras or rings (his, of course). Because Jordan loves and understands my love of eating, over my non-love of shiny things.

Proof?

Why, the next day we were concerned with eating sandwiches and taking pictures of me consuming giant cigar-like pickles.

Salami Sandwich, Soup

This is a typical sort of lunch I make for myself when I'm eating at home alone. There's a salami sandwich on rye with onions, provolone, lettuce and mayonnaise, some Campbell's soup, and a big cup of Kool-Aid. I drink Kool-Aid because it's incredibly cheap; also, by buying the little 25 cent packages of unsweetened drink mix, I can add the sugar myself, thus avoiding the guilt of either soda (high fructose corn syrup) or diet soda (creepy chemicals), although I'm really not sure that artificial colors and white cane sugar are much better. Anyway, it's cheap and tasty.

The salami on the sandwich is Hebrew National. When I was a kid, this was the only deli meat my Jewish grandparents would have in the house, only they bought the big log form; this is the pre-sliced kind. My grandfather would cut it up into little pieces and fry it with eggs in the morning (there was a scene in The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay where a Jewish father does the same thing for his son, and it made me cry). I would slice up the salami to make myself sandwiches on rye bread when I'd be over their house in the afternoons, and this sandwich is sort of a goyish version of that--onions were only really used for frying things at their house, and they would never, ever have mayonnaise or provolone cheese in their fridge.

When I'm home alone, I eat at the computer, or in front of the TV, or while reading a book. I wonder if this is true for everyone. This way, I still feel connected to the world. I don't think anyone should eat in complete solitude.
